The Ss Cyril and Methodius Institute of Post-Graduate Studies together with the Synodal Biblical and Theological Commission are engaged in a three-year project under the general theme “Religion, Science and Society”.

The project is carried out in partnership with the Anglo-American Society of Christian Philosophers and with the support of the John Templeton Foundation.

The first year is devoted to issues of the sociology of religion, the second to the philosophy of religion and religion-science dialogue and the third to modern theology.

In the three years, 15 leading foreign scholars specializing in the philosophy of religion, sociology of religion, Christian theology and dialogue between religion and science will visit Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev and other cities.

During each visit, a visiting scholar will read several lectures at ecclesial and secular platforms and conduct a study seminar with a group of Russian, Ukrainian and Byelorussian scholars selected on a competition basis. During a year, the group, guided by one of the visiting scholars, will undertake a study the findings of which will be submitted to the final conference.

The aim of the project is to advance the academic competence of Russian theologians, philosophers and sociologists of religion, to develop dialogue between religion and science and to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and confidence between ecclesial and secular scholars, which will contribute to fruitful cooperation between the Church and the academic community.

The project “Religion, Science and Society” is an important landmark in the development of dialogue between the Russian Orthodox Church and the world scientific community and a continuation of the long-standing cooperation of the Institute of Post-Graduate Studies and Synodal Biblical and Theological Commission with the Anglo-American Society of Christian Philosophers.
